Why Cruelty-Free Makes "Scents"

Cruelty-Free: Doing the Right Thing or Riding a Trend?
In the skincare and spa industry, we all tend to look for the latest and greatest trends to incorporate into our product lines and spa treatments. But when it comes to cruelty-free products, it’s important for us to understand our motives. Are we caught up in a trend or do we sincerely take the issue to heart?

Why Offer Cruelty-Free Products?

We live and work in 2014, a time when animal testing no longer needs to happen. Over 100 million animals are unnecessarily used every year for testing. Many alternative ways exist to test ingredients and products without harming animals. For example, artificial skin can be used instead of rabbits for skin corrosion and irritation testing. Our industry has options when it comes to selecting the products we use on ourselves and our clients. We have the power to choose wisely and responsibly!

Cruelty-Free Certification
To obtain cruelty-free certification through the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics’ Leaping Bunny Program, you must prove your base ingredients and finished products are not tested on animals. They require documentation from the manufacturers of all ingredients as well as from on-site audits. As the only internationally-recognized certification for companies producing cosmetics, the Leaping Bunny Program represents the most stringent non-animal testing standard. According to LeapingBunny.org, "Only the Leaping Bunny Logo backs up its promise by commissioning on-site audits to assess the validity of each licensee's claim to a ‘no animal testing’ manufacturing policy."

Why Cruelty-Free Makes "Scents"

As owner of Makes Scents Natural Spa Line, I knew from the very start that offering animal-friendly products would be a core business priority. And in 2014, we will be making it an official standard. We don’t want to be about the latest and greatest new ingredient or the hottest new trend. We want to be known for simple, natural products that are effective and keep our furry friends where they belong: in the wild, not in the lab. Focusing on cruelty-free products was an easy choice for us; we love animals, and believe it is our job to protect them. That’s why we’ve built our business model on the foundation of creating a product line that reflects our sense of responsibility for the environment and our respect for all creatures.

Animal testing was once considered a normal part of the product process, but today that’s no longer true. At Makes Scents Natural Spa Line, we believe it’s important to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves. We act on that by ensuring our ingredients and finished products are never tested on animals.

Is cruelty-free a trend? Perhaps. But we’re thrilled to see it grow stronger, because it’s absolutely the right thing to do.
